Who I am

My photo
I am an atheist, in fact, I describe myself as a Humanist for I believe in the good in people, not mythical beings.

Places to avoid

This is a section for establishments that openly promote religion:

National Chains
Chick-fil-a
In-n-Out Burger
Alaska Airlines (include bible quotes with meals)
Forever 21 (puts John 3:16 on their tags)
Country Bob's sauces (look who the CEO is)
Edwards frozen pies (bible verse on pie tin)
Desert Essence (beauty products)
Estes (aquarium stones)
Food for Life (baked goods)
Brim's Old South (chips and the like)
Daniel Chapter One (look at the mission statement at the bottom)
Curves (gyms, leaves bibles in workout areas)
Aldi Foods (has buybull verses on the inside of egg cartons)

Local
Carter Brothers Bar-B-Que North Carolina

Franchises (companies who don't seem to be religiously affiliated but might have franchisees who do)
Subway

If you know of any others, please send me a message giving me the name of the company and if possible a link to the company's website showing that they promote religious ideas.

For example http://www.incrediblepizza.com/about.php If you look at bullet number 3 under the mission statement. "We operate our business by Christian principles". The alternate of this would be if they have a religious symbol on their products and/or building. In the case of the pizza company, they have the jebus fish on the doors as you walk in.

I have to give credit to the religutards over at http://www.prophecyfellowship.org/archive/index.php/t-147138.html who posted most of these for me to find so easily!

*Megaplex Theatres is owned by the Larry H Miller Corp who gives 10% of their earnings to the LDS church

If you have the name and possibly a website of a company who proseltyzies a religion and would like me to add it, please comment on this post: http://yamipirogoeth.blogspot.com/2010/07/places-to-avoid.html

Sayings

So I've been thinking lately (oh no, don't tell the fundies, they'll accuse me of being heretical), about a lot of things, but for this post, specifically sayings people will say as an exclamation.

Some examples:
Crap
Shit
Dammit
What the hell
Gah (personal favorite)
Oh my god

It's the last one that I was mostly thinking about. I said it after seeing some absolutely horrendous driving and thought to myself "hmm...what would happen if I said that around someone who was even moderately religious let alone could be described as a fundie" Of course I don't have anyone that I can really ask in person cause all the people I know are either apathetic to religion or are fairly religious but have learned NOT to bring up religion with me (mostly cause they keep losing all the debates they have with me).

But, my ultimate thinking is...why should I say "oh my god" when I'm an atheist (unless I take a solipsist approach at which point I guess I would be a god to everything I experience), and why should I say something along the lines of "oh my hell".

I have actually gotten myself away from saying "oh my god" and saying "oh my hell" instead, much to the confusion of people around me (not to mention using OMH online has produced some hilarious results).

So, at this point, I'd like to ask anyone who reads my blog what your take is. Do you still say OMG or would you feel better saying OMH (being that you're atheist or any variation thereof)?

Catholics are truly disgusting

First and foremost read this: http://www.anatheist.net/2009/12/should-catholics-decide-what-you-see/

Now...this is just truly and absolutely disgusting. This is not only censorship, but religious censorship. Bill Donahue is one of those people that I think should join Fred Phelps...DEAD. To turn around and shove their heads so far up their asses to boycott a movie that doesn't specifically mention the Catholic church...and then to say that it introduces kids to atheism? =_= WHAT...THE...FUCK?

Though, I guess I shouldn't be too surprised from some bigot like Donahue. I'm sure if he had his way, every other religion on the planet would be illegal, EVERY store in the world would say "Merry Christmas" during the month of December and all Atheists would be burned at the stake circa 1400's.

I really wanted to see how they would get books 2 and 3 into film format to. But now, thanks to some deluded IDiots, no one can. Also, while I do respect their right to say they don't like the film, but to act like this was some stupid victory for Christianity...no, you don't get the right to free speech for stifling it in others, it does NOT work that way.

If I had the sort of money required to fund a movie like these, I would push in every way to make these 2 films possible. For 2 reasons. 1) To let the world see the film format of His Dark Materials and 2) To tell Bill Donahue "Fuck you you bigoted asshole, you and your sheeple can not and will not stifle other people's opinions under the guise of free speech."

Now I need to go buy His Dark Materials and read all 3 books (only read the first so far), cause I'm gonna support Phillip Pullman as much as I possibly can!

Happy Holidays and a Merry Solstice!

I was recently out shopping with my mother...last Friday evening to be exact. We had to run into Walmart...not really to buy anything but mostly to meet a radio DJ who was doing a live show inside and was letting people play Guitar Hero and could sign up to win an Xbox 360, Guitar Hero game and limited edition Logitech guitar for the game. On our way in, there was a Salvation Army peddler out front of the entrance.

Now, due to their affiliations, I do not donate to any of these people. If I am going to donate, it's going to be a group that supports Equal Rights, GLBT, or Atheists. However I will at least smile and nod to them as I walk in. On the way out however, the becomes a different story. Now this is just my experience, but EVERYTIME I come walking out of the store past the same bell ringer I walked in past, they always eye me like they expect that I have change on me or just got money out when I made my purchase (I hate handling money thanks to my mysophobia). To their credit, they do at least wish me a Merry Christmas.

This brings me to the title of this post. We walked in, nodded to the person, stayed in the store for a while and did what we needed to (and if anyone's interested, the DJ that was there is Kerry Jackson from X96's Radio From Hell morning show). On the way out of the store, sure as Sol rising every morning, this bell ringer was eyeing me again. As we got right next to them they bleated out the usual "Merry Christmas" to which I turned and looked at them and said "Happy Holidays and a Merry Solstice". I almost feel bad for the person, cause as I kept looking, I could see that all mental function had stopped when I hadn't returned their programmed Christian line with the same line. I wanted to see what other reactions I would get, but I needed to get home so I left this bell ringer (who had now stopped ringing) standing in the cold wondering what I just said.

It's probably pretty obvious that there is a rather large multitude of Christians here (with it being Salt Lake City and home to the Mormons) and it goes without saying that they all expect everyone else is some denomination of Christian as well (unless you look like you're from the Middle East, Black, or Asian and then just assume that you're some Satan worshipping non-white individual who is threatening their everlasting glory with god almighty). So the very thought of being wished a secular Christmas and not the stolen holiday of the Christians usually puts them on edge or pretty much stops all forms of thinking they had.

I'm still waiting for that one Christian IDiot to turn and demand that it be "Merry Christmas" and spout some programmed drivel that it's to celebrate the birth of Christ. Because when that does, I want to attempt to do an intellectual debate (yeah, I know, it's oxymoron to say you want to have an intellectual debate with a creationist) and see if they really know anything about Christmas other than it's Christ's birthday and the BS that goes into the whole nativity scene.

War on Christmas? More like War on Paganism

Courtesy to American Atheists for the link: http://www.atheists.org/Pre-Christian_Christmas_Stories_with_Other_Gods

I bring up this link cause this past Friday when I was downtown handing out flyers for an upcoming masquerade ball I saw SEVERAL of these downtown http://www.hsvkofc.org/v2/images/stories/2009/Grand_Knight/Billboard.jpg

-_- Honestly...I was disgusted. 1) It goes back to the first link from the American Atheists...obviously there's no reason to keep Christ in Christmas when it's obviously stolen to begin with. 2) I got to thinking of what some theists did to the billboards around the country http://friendlyatheist.com/2009/10/21/reactions-to-atheist-billboards/ (thanks to Hemant Mehta for the link) and the thought popped into my head to do the same, however, I decided that I'm better than the theists who did the vandalization. But, hey, what would I know, I'm just some godless asshole that is trying to steal Christmas from Christians and am the scum of the Earth, but it's PERFECTLY fine for them to go and deface an Atheist billboard.

Anyways, enough of my cynicism regarding the topic of the billboards and on to the topic of Christmas/Yule/Kwanzaa/Solstice/Hanukkah/etc. We all know the spirit of the month of December, give to your fellow human and help others to feel better. Pretty simple yet powerful meaning...why does it have to be muddled with religion *sighs* I think I'm starting to agree with some of the concepts of like Richard Dawkins...like how religion is pretty much useless in today's society (I'm not quoting, just agreeing with him and my thoughts). I personally believe that religion should be banished...especially the Abrahamic religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam). On the season note...why does it have to be so commercialized? I mean, why do I have to go out, blow my paycheck, screw my credit score all to make people happy like that? Maybe it's just the Humanist in my speaking...
